meet the team
At Crawford Architects we have experience in effectively working within a team focused project, utilising the skills of external consultants and professionals where required.
We understand the importance of communication and coordination to ensure a successful project. Crawford Architects will ensure a concept envisioned at the start of a project will follow through from design development to construction documentation until built true to the initial desired design. We strive to produce successful and long-lasting spaces and buildings.
TONY GRAY
Managing Director
Tony’s career began when he completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Newcastle in 1981. Soon after graduating, he cut his architectural teeth in London working for the BBC and Lobb Partnerships (now Populous) primarily on sports architecture projects. In 1996 Tony formed Mellor Gray which 10 years later merged with Crawford Architects. Throughout his career, Tony has completed a range of project types including medium density residential, clubs and entertainment, industrial and commercial.
As Managing Director, the buck stops with Tony on all design and documentation, client liaison and strategic planning as well as quality management.
Tony has a particular interest in sustainability and was instrumental in Crawford’s involvement in the Reducing Carbon Emissions Scheme – A Guide for Architects program that was developed by the NSW Architects Registration Board.
Tony has also been on the Board of Directors of the Sydney Youth Orchestras.
PAUL GODSELL
Design Director
Paul earned his Bachelor of Architecture at UTA Sydney before leaving one of Sydney’s largest practices (Hassell) to become an integral member of a smaller office (MDA) during an exciting time of rapid growth thanks to a string of successful submissions for Aquatic and Stadia venues. His desire to pursue large public infrastructure projects then took Paul to the UK where he worked on Emirates Stadium, the ‘Northern Triangle’ housing project (the largest Zinc clad residential building in Europe), and the Ebbsfleet and Stratford Channel Tunnel stations, frequently viewed on the international stage.
Upon returning to Australia, Paul continued to work on large format architecture projects including sports stadia and industrial warehousing. Paul’s extensive experience, aptitude for design, passion for detail and hands-on approach saw him become a Director at Crawford Architects in 2011.
Not content with sitting on the side-line (or behind the drawing board), Paul believes getting involved is not negotiable when it comes to sport regardless of ball shape, racket construction or degree of water saturation. Paul’s philosophy is that life is perpetually “game on” and with four children - this mantra certainly helps.
